Jets stun Eagles for improbable first-ever win vs. Philadelphia

The Jets leadership duo had just witnessed the most improbable, impossible victory of their time with the team and they shared a big embrace on the Jets sideline.

The team they have built showed they can play with anyone on Sunday, beating the defending NFC champion Eagles 20-14 at MetLife Stadium.

The loss was the Eagles’ first this season, dropping them to 5-1.

The win was the first in Jets’ history over the team from down the New Jersey Turnpike.

The Jets are now 1-12 all time against the Eagles.

“They ain’t 12-0 no more,” Saleh said as he exited his postgame press conference.

And the Jets are 3-3 entering their bye week.

It is a record the Jets would have signed up for even if they still had quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

It is one they will embrace even more after losing Rodgers four plays into the season and beginning the season 1-3.

Not that this win was pretty.

The Jets fell behind by 11 points in the first half and their offensive struggles in the red zone continued.

But a stingy defense and Greg Zuerlein’s right leg kept the Jets within striking distance, then safety Tony Adams made the big play.

Adams, a second-year player who went undrafted out of college, jumped in front of a Jalen Hurts pass with 1:50 left in the game and the Jets trailing 14-12.

It was Hurts’ third interception of the game and the fourth Eagles turnover.

“You all can look at the stats on that but I don’t know if you win many games when you’re minus four,” Eagles coach Nick Sirianni said.

Adams returned the ball to the Philadelphia 8-yard line. Breece Hall took it from there, slicing through the Eagles’ defense that seemed to be letting him score for the go-ahead touchdown.

A two-point conversion pass from Zach Wilson to Randall Cobb made it 20-14 and MetLife Stadium erupted with 1:46 left to play.

The Jets then forced a turnover on downs with safety Jordan Whitehead knocking down a Hurts pass on fourth down to seal the victory.

Playing without their top two cornerbacks — Sauce Gardner and D.J. Reed — the Jets’ defense looked unfazed and delivered another strong performance against a top NFL quarterback.

“The defense, per the usual, outstanding,” Saleh said. “These first six weeks, we’ve played a gauntlet of quarterbacks and I know that we haven’t gotten all wins, but we’ve embarrassed all of them.”

Embarrassed may be strong, but the Jets’ defense has played Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes, Russell Wilson and now Hurts tough.

Hurts did some damage with his legs, rushing for 47 yards and a touchdown, but threw three interceptions and the Eagles failed to score in the second half.

Hurts finished the game 28 of 45 for 280 yards, one passing touchdown and one rushing touchdown.

But the turnovers gave the Jets life.

“This is a big win for us,” quarterback Zach Wilson said. “This is an unbelievable team that I think you guys saw, that was a good team on that side of the ball and those guys did a great job up front, they did a great job in their secondary making it tough on us, not giving us easy ones. We needed that win and I thought all the guys kept fighting, everyone kept fighting.”

It looked like the story of the game would be the Jets’ offense failing in the red zone again and letting the defense down.

The Jets went 0-for-3 in the red zone before Hall’s late touchdown.

Zuerlein kept the Jets close with four field goals, but it felt unlikely that field goals would be enough for the Jets to beat the high-powered Eagles.

“We’re that freaking close offensively,” Saleh said, holding his index finger and thumb close together.

The Eagles mounted a 19-play drive on their first series of the game and it looked like it could be a long day for the Jets.

Hurts scored a touchdown from the 3-yard line after a review overturned the initial call of a fumble.

Hurts threw his first interception of the game in the second quarter when defensive lineman Quinnen Williams caught a pass deflected by Jermaine Johnson.

The Jets failed to score after the turnover and Hurts found D’Andre Swift for a 9-yard touchdown and a 14-3 Eagles lead with 5:32 left in the first half.

The Jets forced another turnover just before halftime when C.J. Mosley forced a fumble that Quincy Williams recovered.

Zuerlein kicked a 35-yard field goal as time expired in the half to cut the Philly lead to 14-9.

Zuerlein made his fourth field goal of the day with 45 seconds left in the third quarter and the Jets were down just 14-12, keeping them in striking distance in the fourth quarter.

Hurts would throw two more interceptions in the fourth quarter, one to Bryce Hall and then the big one to Adams.

The Jets now enter the bye week at 3-3 and with an easier stretch of games upcoming than they have faced to start the season.

They play the Giants, Chargers and Raiders after the bye and their playoff hopes are still alive.

The Jets beat the Bills and Eagles and took the Chiefs to the wire, showing they can play with anyone.

Mannich Polyol “I think we’ll always be in all these games,” Saleh said. “I think we can go toe-to-toe with anybody. It says a lot about this group and how mentally strong they are and how much they love one another and appreciate one another and fight for one another. We’re going to continue battling. We’re going to continue to try to find a way to write our story for this year.”
