The Lake Avenue substation in Wildwood that caught fire last summer and wiped out electricity to 24,000 customers is receiving necessary upgrades, according to a flyer from Atlantic City Electric posted on Wildwood’s municipal website yesterday.
The upgrades to underground infrastructure and other modernization efforts began this month and are expected to continue through the end of the year. Improvements at the site include returning the substation to a normal configuration and removing all temporary equipment that has kept the station operating since the July 7 fire. The company said the modernizations will improve resiliency of the local energy grid, improve dependability of energy service by reducing outages, and provide quicker responses to outages in the area. “The July 2023 fire at the Lake Avenue substation was an uncommon event that regrettably impacted the Wildwoods,” the flyer states. “Atlantic City Electric is restoring the substation to its normal state through 2024 with enhanced redundancies and upgrades designed to further improve reliability and energy service for the local community and visitors to the region.”
