How to keep your hob super clean

You've cleaned the dishes, wiped down the surfaces and stored any leftovers in the fridge — all that's left is to wipe down the hob! The right way to clean your kitchen hob may depend on what it's made from. Here's everything you need to know.

Make sure you have plenty of cloths handy to help clean your hob. You can opt for a microfibre cloth or a general cleaning cloth. A coarser cloth will help to work away food deposits, while a smoother one will allow you to finish the job with a buff. The e-cloth Hob & Oven Pack contains one of each type.

Unless you really don't have time, ideally you need to clean your hob straight after you use, every time you use it. While the dirt is still fresh and hasn't had time to dry, remove it with a quick wipe. Don't forget to wipe down knobs and any other areas your hands may have been!

If you have a gas hob, some pan supports and spillage wells are dishwasher-safe. Otherwise, use a cream cleaner and a damp cloth.

Spray a solution of white vinegar – you can refill an old trigger spray bottle once it's been thoroughly rinsed – on to a stainless-steel hob and let it work on the grease for a few minutes before wiping the gunk away with a sponge.

With any glass-topped hob — including ceramic, halogen and induction — you need to wipe up spills immediately (while you're still cooking ideally), especially sugar, which can crystallise and damage the hob.

Use a specialised hob cleaner, such as Waitrose ceramic hob cleaner, or even just a damp e-cloth to remove light soiling. Make sure you check that the cleaner can be safely used on your type of hob.

Stubborn stains and burned-on deposits should be removed with a special hob scraper, which will not damage the glass.

To prevent scratches, always lift pans when moving them across the hob, and check that the bases of pans are clean and dry. It's amazing what damage a tiny piece of grit on the base of the pan can do!
