Some retailers offer rewards if you bring in your old things rather than tossing them in the trash. Below is a list of retailers that do that and what they offer. Make sure you call the retailer near you (before you lug in your stuff) to make sure they participate in the recycling program. If they don’t, they might be able to point you to another one that does.

You can bring in a bag filled with any brand of clothing, in any condition. In exchange, you’ll get a coupon to use on your next purchase. H&M says it collected 18,800 tons of unwanted clothes and textiles through its Garment Collecting program in 2020. That’s the equivalent of 94 million T-shirts.

Bring in any brand of denim and you get $20 off a pair of new jeans. Madewell says 548 tons of waste have been saved from the landfill since its program began.

Did you know that 1.8 million used batteries are tossed in the trash every year, causing lead-acid and mercury to seep into lakes and streams? You can bring in a car battery to Advance Auto Parts and in return, you’ll get a $10 gift card.

This trade-in program will let you put money towards a new device. For example, if you bring in an old iPad, you can get up to $490 towards a new one. If you bring in an old iPhone, you can get up to $640. For a Mac, you can get up to $1425.

You can trade in devices in the store or online at tradein.target.com. All you have to do is answer questions about what kind of device it is and its condition. The site will then tell you how much you’ll get back on a gift card.

For this one, you need to be a member of the loyalty program. But through the North Face Renewed take-back program, you can drop off used The North Face clothes or footwear and you get $10 store credit in return.

Don’t throw out those ink cartridges. Take your empty ink and toner cartridges to the nearest Office Depot, and they’ll give you $2 back in rewards per cartridge. You have to make a $10 qualifying purchase during that same month to receive the rewards.

Members of Staples Rewards, which is Staples’ loyalty program, get $2 back in Staples Rewards for each ink and toner cartridge they recycle in stores or online, provided they have spent at least $50 on ink or toner at Staples over the previous 180 days.

You can trade in old Hydro Flask water bottles or other Hydro Flask stainless steel products and get a $5 coupon in return.

Send in your old, used sponge and you can get a $2 coupon to get yourself a new sponge.
